Condominiums R Us

July 18, 2008

So a family member of mine happens to own a condominium and is currently displaying a very visible sign in support of one of the candidates running for President of the United States of America within the confines of his property.

Despite the fact that there is no current association bylaw or rule specifying signage standards and limitations, said family member received a letter from the company that manages his condominium association (and ostensibly others) demanding that he remove the sign or be subject to fines accruing at the rate of $25 per day.

Which would be awesome for them, except one huge detail they overlooked… about the only kind of signage an association in our state cannot bar is the US flag or a political sign:

703.105 (1m) No bylaw or rule may be adopted or provision included in a declaration or deed that prohibits a unit owner from displaying in his or her condominium a sign that supports or opposes a candidate for public office or a referendum question.

So your business is to manage multiple condominium associations (2600 units, fcol)? And you’re too fucking ignorant to be familiar with this butt-obvious portion of the state condominium statute? The definitive set of laws for your specialty?

OOOOR… you support the other candidate and thought you could bully a single condo owner, hoping they weren’t informed of the law that protects them, their property and yes, their personal liberty.

Either way? Here on the internets, they call that a FAIL.

This one might have caused an obscenity shit storm…

I hope the family member puts the smack down on soon. I’d love to hear the response.

  2. Yeah, he sent a letter back letting them know what time it is. Except he fancied it up with some of his lawyer mumbo jumbo.

That’s fantastic. That’s a big GFY of the good variety to your family member.

TIA GFY, condo association! Go team! (Hi FugD.)
